Fenwick beat St. Joseph for the second time this season to win the Catholic League postseason basketball tournament 73-51 at DePaul on Saturday. The Friars jumped to an early 8-0 lead and opened the second half going 15-0.
Mike Smith led Fenwick with 27 points while Quinn Fisher added 12 points and Jacob Keller contributed with 11 points. Nick Rakocevic led St. Joseph with 21 points as the Chargers struggled on both ends of the court.
St. Joseph won the Class 3A championship for Gene Pingatore last season. Pingatore has won two state basketball titles and 981 games.
These two squads could see each other again in this year’s state playoffs that begin this week.
Providence won the third place game 54-45 over St Laurence as Eric Justice made five three-point baskets in the victory.
